PART I The Writer's Path: How to plan, be creative and find flow

3-Part Masterclass: Part I Planning for Success

Hi there!

Welcome to my 3-part masterclass! 🌟

It’s called The Writer’s Path because it’s going to be so useful to you, whatever stage of your writing journey you’ve reached - whether you’re just starting out or you’re a professional writer - this short series will give you the tools you need for any aspect of your writing life.

I created this workshop several years ago for PhD students at universities and it’s become my most popular half-day masterclass. Since I first launched it, I’ve seen many students become less confident in their writing and more overwhelmed by the tasks facing them.

Does this sound familiar? I’m sure I’m not alone if feeling like this too.

I also realised there was no point teaching this workshop if I didn’t do everything in it myself. So now I do and I have constantly refined the workshops so that I can give you, not only advice from experts, but what I’ve found to work myself.

You can do all the workshops, or just one, and in any order, but I think this order - planning, creativity and flow - is ideal and I really hope that if you do all three, you’ll be able to tackle any writing project with efficiency, focus and enthusiasm!

I’ve created a list of my top 10 books on being more productive to get you started!

Part I covers being productive, efficient and planning; Part II is on how to be more creative, overcome writer’s blocks and boost your confidence and Part III is on how to find flow.

This masterclass is for paid members of

. At some stage I will make it available to buy and one workshop would cost more than the current price of the annual membership. In addition, when you become a paid subscriber, you’ll have access all three parts, as well as a masterclass and / or a live workshop every month, plus essays on the craft of writing, and be able to read my short stories and my full length nature memoir, Wilderness: In Search of Belonging, as well as benefit from discounts on mentoring and staying at our writing retreat in the Mendips, Somerset. So it’s a bargain!

Welcome to Part 1: Planning for Success

You’ll need a notebook and pen, A3 paper, coloured pens and post-its.

In this session, we’ll break down how to plan your entire writing project over a year as well as organising your time week by week, day by day. I’ll share strategies for overcoming procrastination, and tools to give you purpose.

Planning is the foundation of creative success -

Yogi bear said, If you don’t plan for where you want to go, you’ll end up someplace else.

And that can be absolutely fine, but there is still no harm in becoming more productive.

We’re going to start with the big picture—your overall writing project. Whether it’s a novel, a memoir, or a collection of stories, every successful project begins with a solid plan.

We’ll explore tools and techniques to help you stay organised, from Gantt charts and Kanban boards to setting SMART goals.

Next, we’ll zoom in on how to structure your time effectively, using frameworks like the 12-Week Year to stay focused, and the Pomodoro Technique to maximise productivity in small, manageable chunks.

By the end of this session, you’ll have a clear roadmap for your writing project and the strategies to help you tackle it.

If you struggle with self-doubt and procrastination, then Part II Building Confidence and Creativity will help with that.

I suggest allowing yourself about 2 hours if you do all the exercises now, but you may want to tackles them at different stages.
